Renal failure patients had better not to eat honey-dew melon

http://www.crf-cure.com/FAQ/86.html

Honey-dew melons are so delicious that many people like them. But patients with renal failure could eat them?

Honey-dew melons are delicious and rich in nutrients. They contain many potassium ions, there being about 250 mg of potassium in every 100 g of melon meat. For patients with renal failure, their glomeruli filtrating efficiency declines and renal tubular function reduces, which lead to declining function of discharging potassium. Intake of high potassium foods may lead to cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, patients with renal failure are not suggested to eat honey-dew melons. Though potassium is indispensable in body, high potassium in body would have a big effect on heart and even threaten lives.

Patients with renal failure would suffer from endocrine disorders and metabolic disorders. Due to abnormality of draining and regulating function of kidney, patients would suffer from oliguria or anuria clinically, which would lead to some metabolic disorders in body, especially disorder of potassium metabolism. Oliguria or anuria would inhibit timely excretion of potassium, which would lead to hyperkalemia.

Therefore, patients with renal failure should pay more attention to daily diet, and make certain what they should not eat.
